What Tools to Use for Deep Hole Drilling

Deep hole drilling is a difficult task considering the tools to be used are also quite bulky and difficult to operate. To do this all drilling engineers outline safety precautions for the people that would operate the much complicated tools. These tools are also closely monitored by compliance personnel, service contractors, drilling contractor among others. There would be organizations that would even have geologists on site to facilitate in monitoring drilling operations. In theory and in practice, deep hole drilling is a hole depth that is at least 10x bigger than the diameter of the hole. Aside from the highly specialize personnel, the operation also needs highly specialized equipment. Other factors to be looked at are straightness, roundness, finish, and tolerances. Since this is a difficult task there are also tools that are developed for the job. We would be discussing some of these in the below list.

1.      Gun Drilling – these are straight fluted drills that are used in deep hole drilling and allows suitable and compressed liquid to be pumped out of the body by cutting the face. They are also used in manufacturing, metals. moldmaking, wood work, plastics and some musical instruments too.  The following are the types of gun drills: Boring and Trepanning Association / Single Tube System (BTA/STS) and the more complex Ejector System.

2.      Vibration Drilling – This relatively new type of drilling uses axial vibrations to make the drills work. The original vibration drills can be traced back to the 1950’s but it is only now that this technology is now being refined and used more often in deep hole drilling.

3.      Trepanning – is primarily used for a bigger diameter holes. Similar to a drafting compass it aims to remove the surface to drill inside giving it a precise cut.

These are the most common types of deep hole drilling machines. There are other deep hole drilling machines or tools such as drilling spindle power, nominal drilling depth among others and all these tools provide the same power as the ones mentioned above. These are then coupled with personnel that are highly trained and high tech monitoring systems. The aim is to control emissions, forces, toque and vibrations that come along with drilling. In the future, more of these tools and machines alongside with trained individuals who would employ strategy, safety and compliance to standard operating procedures. As technology evolves, these machines and tools would make deep hole drilling much efficient, effective and clean cut. This in turn would make the laborious tasks and procedures of drilling cleaner and economical. This would also be cost effective and very minimal to so many degrees. Most importantly it will ensure the safety of the people involved in work.
