Benefits of Music Lessons for Young Children

There are few in the world who have not been touched or moved at some point in their lives by a piece of music.  This artful form of expression has been around for centuries and it is no coincidence that it has such profound effects.  While few will achieve the proficiency of Mozart or Bach, there are benefits to be had by taking music lessons.  This is especially true when it comes to young children.  There are definite benefits of music lessons for children.  Here are some of the many that have been noted.

  • Teamwork.  Music is something that becomes more beautiful with the addition of instruments. When children learn to play music and play along with a chorus or orchestra, the benefits are more than delightful sound.  They learn how to be part of a team, how to cooperate to produce good results.
  • Communication.  Studies have proven over and over again that music lessons improve language skills, improve emotional understanding and develop communication.  Children find it easier to express themselves and find it easier to identify with the feelings of others.  Music helps the brain to reason and identify emotion.  These important improvements aid in successful communication.
  • Concentration.  Music requires that a child learn to focus, practice and keep at it.  The more proficient they become the greater their powers of concentration are.  How does this help a child?  For one thing it can improve their test taking abilities, raise scores and help them achieve greater academic success.
  • Discipline.  This point ties in well with teamwork and concentration.  To improve in their musical ability, children learn the benefits of discipline.  By working hard, focusing and not giving up they see the pay off.  This life lesson can be carried over from music into nearly everything else.  They learn to work hard and keep trying.  As a byproduct they also develop a greater sense of self-worth and confidence.
  • Conquer fear.  Taking risks is not always a good thing.  However at times being able to conquer fears by taking reasonable risks can prove beneficial.  With music, playing in front of an audience may seem scary, but when that fear is conquered there are positive results.  This is another benefit that also helps to raise a child's confidence.

Music is something that just about everyone enjoys.  Working hard to become a better musician – whether naturally talented or not – can produce many benefits than just being able to play an instrument well.  Expressing emotion, communicating and improved language and reasoning are just a few of the advantages a child experiences when taking music lessons.  Another bonus to music, it is a fun hobby.
